Pool hall serves up burgers

John "Baldhead Bull" Parker, 33, started hanging out at Sports Center Billiards on Broad Street because it had a reputation as being "biker friendly." Now he brings his 4-year-old son with him and refers to the pool hall and bar as a family restaurant.

Sports Center Billiards has become well known for the massive burgers being cooked in the front window.

"We're pretty well known for our hamburgers," said owner Sandy Watkins, 46.

And the burgers are tasty, but diners shouldn't come by for a quick bite.

"This is not fast food," warns Ms. Watkins. "We make everything from scratch."

Patrons who arrive early for lunch can watch as Ms. Watkins shapes the hamburger patties and mixes the batter for the onion rings.

But Sports Center is as much a meeting place as it is a burger joint.

"It's one big conversation up and down the bar," Mr. Parker said.

That conversation is not reserved for regulars. Ms. Watkins welcomes almost every customer with a smile and a friendly hello, and she generally remembers who's a repeat customer.

"It's nice to know there's a place here you can come in, relax, and get good service," said Bill Humphrey, 54, a first-time patron.
