Five questions

Monday, April 5, 2004

Matthew Widener, 24, has been bartending at the Surrey Tavern in Surrey Center for three years. The pub, just a chip shot from Augusta National Golf Club, is a favorite watering hole for Masters Tournament fans and locals.

1. Who's the most famous person you've waited on?

"I've never waited on anybody famous. Everybody else sees them, and I hear about it. Emmitt Smith (who played for the Dallas Cowboys) was in here."

2. Are Masters fans a martini or beer crowd?

"Mostly beer and mostly Bud Light. They drink as many as they can."

3. What was your biggest Masters tip?

"I got $100 tip on a $5.50 tab. It was very generous. In fact, I tried to give it back, but the guy told me to keep it."

4. What are your hours like during Masters Week?

"Usually from 12:30 p.m. until 4 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Wednesday through Saturday are the really big nights. It comes to the point we can't let anybody else in the bar until we let somebody out."

5. Does the idiot factor go up during Masters Week?

"No more than usual. You get them every week."
