City will celebrate Palmer's accolades

Arnold Palmer (Stats | Bio) has received dozens of awards in his golf career, ranging from Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year to the Patriot Award given by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.
Today, he will receive another honor, as Augusta celebrates Arnold Palmer (Stats | Bio) Day at the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame's Botanical Gardens on Reynolds Street. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and the ceremony will be held at 6:15 in front of the Palmer statue in the gardens.
The event is free and open to the public.
Palmer, who is celebrating his 50th straight Masters Tournament appearance this week, will receive a crystal key to the city at the Mayor's Masters Reception.
Gov. Sonny Perdue has declared today Arnold Palmer (Stats | Bio) Day for Georgia, and Augusta Mayor Bob Young has proclaimed the same for the city.
In addition to receiving every major honor in golf, Palmer has received five honorary degrees and a slew of civic-related awards.
He has been inducted into several halls of fame, including the World Golf Hall of Fame, the PGA Hall of Fame and Wake Forest Hall of Fame.
Today's event also will feature professional golfer Vaughn Taylor, who grew up in Augusta and is a member of the PGA Tour.
Some of the other Masters participants could attend, said Wayne Hawkins, one of the event organizers.
Restaurants will be offering free samples at the reception.
