Birdie watchers see few at 11

THE GOOD

Richard Green stands by his ball on the 11th green. The Masters rookie was one of 57 players to par the hole. Only eight competitors managed to birdie it. (Rainier Ehrhardt/Staff)

- Mark O'Meara, the 1998 Masters champion, entered No. 11 at 2-over par after a bogey at the par-4 10th. He reached the front of the green and proceeded to roll in a 25-foot birdie putt, one of the few birdies on the hole.

O'Meara's three at White Dogwood gave him a lift. He went on to record birdies at Nos. 12 and 13 to become the lone player in the field to birdie his way around Amen Corner.

- Zach Johnson had to get a ruling in the 11th fairway after laying up his second shot. When the 2007 Masters champ finally played, it was worth the wait, and he got within eight feet of the pin.

Johnson averted disaster with a par-saving putt.

"Eleven was big," he said after his round of 2-under 70. "I hit a poor drive, pitched out and hit a 9-iron to eight feet and made that for par. That was kind of a round-saver."

THE BAD

- Native Augustan Charles Howell splashed his approach shot in the pond short and left of the green. Instead of going back to the drop zone, he decided to drop in the nearby second cut. From there, he hit his fourth shot past the pin.

Howell failed to make the bogey putt from 12 feet. He tapped in for double bogey to fall to 4-over on his round.

- In his first Masters appearance, Prayad Marksaeng discovered how tough the 11th hole is. He launched a shot that found Rae's Creek behind the bunker and trees. He double-bogeyed the hole and finished the first round at 10-over-par 82.

THE UNIQUE

- Miguel Angel Jimenez shot 77, but the score could've been much worse. The Spaniard hooked his second shot left of the green, left of the pond and into Rae's Creek. Instead of returning to the drop area, he took a drop on a narrow strip of land between the two areas of water bordering No. 11.

Staring down a likely double bogey, Jimenez deftly pitched up to 10 feet. He rolled in the bogey putt, limiting the damage.

- Phil Mickelson was 1-under par with the chance to birdie the 11th hole. When his putt lipped out, his hands rose to the back of his head in frustration.
